Deport, Texas #1 | April 2006 |
|
My first trip to Deport, Texas was pretty exciting. I had never been on a prolonged meteorite hunt, I had a brand new detector, and well, this was Texas! McCartney had made sure that the landowners were aware of our endeavours, so that there would be no "shoot, shovel and shut up" issues. We spend the first day on the field, high grass, and covered only about an acre or so. On the second day it rained for a few hours, so we tried to find more landowners to talk to them about the project. McCartney was able to secure another few dozen acres for our purposes. We tried to finish up the field that we had started, many holes were dug, some of them more than 3 feet deep. Day three was frustrating. We came across an area with some weird mineralization, and the detectors seemd to beep everywhere. I dug a few holes without finding anything. We were now next to a small swampy area, and at around mid-afternoon, a section of it started to smoulder. Quite bizarre. On the last day I only had till about 11am before I had to head back to Dallas to catch my flight. We finished the field we had started on the day before and moved across a creek to look at a new area. We got about two dozen signals, all barbed wire. At 20 minutes to 11 o"clock, I decided that that would be my last hole, as I still had to clean up for my drive back. I dug down, and much to my surprise (and joy), I pulled out a 2.3kg Deport Iron. It was pretty rusted, and a lot of shale came off, but I had found my first meteorite! What an awesome feeling! A short clip of the discovery Victory - pulling it out of the ground! |
